Chapter Fourteen

The telephone rang as he was in the shower, and Gil lunged to grab it, knocking it off the sink and onto the floor, where he grasped at it with wet fingers. He was grateful for the patience of whomever was on the other end of the line, because they didn’t give up, even though he had to dry his hands and then the phone, which he couldn’t answer until he was able to swipe across the screen. Finally, he managed it.

“Hello?”

“Gil, it’s Micah,” came the voice. “Just checking in to see how you are.”

“Hi, Micah,” Gil replied, wiping soap from his eyes with a towel. “You’ve caught me in the shower. Can I call you back?”

“Sure, sure,” Micah replied. “Talk to you soon.”

He hung up, and Gil rinsed the rest of the soap from his body, got into sweatpants and a t-shirt, and once he sat on the sofa, returned Micah’s call.

They made small talk about their day, as Micah explained that the work of a social worker never seemed to be over, but that he hoped he’d get some time off that weekend to see his mom, who lived somewhere between Minneapolis and Windom.

“What about school?” Micah asked. “Have you decided to enroll Roxy where you work?”

It just worries me, that she’s going to make friends, and settle in to a whole new life, and once Marguerite gets better and takes her back again, she’s going to have to leave it all behind and start all over in a new place. It’s just not good for her.”

“I understand,” Micah said, sympathetically. “You can see the problems that we face every day. Whether to move a child from their life in one place to a whole new place where we know they’ll be safe, which is the most important thing, but it means that they have to deal with the upset of relocating. Kids are resilient, Gil. Remember that. And they can deal with the kind of things that we as adults would struggle with.”

“Well, at least I’ll be able to keep an eye on her,” Gil said. “And I’ll be able to get back to work. They stopped my pay last week. Said they can’t reinstate it until I come back. I get it. It’s not like I’ve been on vacation, but I haven’t had a sick day since I started. I only found out when a friend told me.”

“Well, how about I come by on Saturday?” Micah asked. “That way, Roxy will have had a few days in her new school, you’ll be back in a routine, and we can see how everything’s going?”

“Sure,” Gil replied. “Saturday.”

They hung up. Gil was pleasantly surprised at the thought of seeing Micah again. Roxy was in bed, asleep, and even
